DRIVING LICENCE REMINDER

What happens to my driving license in Spain?

If you live in Spain and have a valid UK driving license, it will be recognized for driving in Spain until June 30, 2021.

If you wish to exchange your British permit for your Spanish card, the process to follow depends on whether you registered your intention to exchange it with the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) before December 30, 2020.

If you registered with the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) before December 30, 2020: If you were a resident in Spain before January 1, 2021 and you registered with the DGT before December 30, 2020, you must request an appointment with the DGT to redeem your UK permit before December 31, 2021 (This date has recently been extended)

To redeem your license you will need:
Proof that you are registered as a resident in Spain (for example, TIE – Foreigner Identity Card; green EU residence certificate)
Your UK license

Access the DGT website on how to make the change: https://sede.dgt.gob.es/…/canje-renovacion-sustitucion-uk

The DGT will exchange your British license for a temporary authorization to drive until your Spanish license is processed. This document is only valid in Spain.

If you have not registered with the DGT before December 30, 2020
If you did not register with the DGT before December 30, 2020 and you want to exchange your UK driving license, you will need to follow the DGT process for non-EU citizens. This includes taking a driving test.
